A Stone, A spark, A shard of glass

A g20 artist collective exhibition

Each word relates to an element of the research of artist members of the G20 Artist Collective around the collection of Maryhill Museum and its surroundings. Stones, sparks, matches, glass, illuminous floating waterways, concrete, madder dye, liminal spaces, stairs and rails were just some of the things the artists looked at and saw anew while creating work specifically to be shown in Maryhill Museum. Supported by Maryhill Burgh Halls Trust, each artist was tasked with making something that was very much their own work but also firmly rooted within Maryhill or the Museum’s collection.

Some of the artworks are clearly attached to a specific object such as a sandstone block that forms part of the museum, while some of the works are more dreamlike and interpretative, suggesting what could be there in addition to unarguable reality.

Some works hover between a past era of historical images of Maryhill and the present, giving us an uncanny and unsettling feeling of existing concurrently in two time frames. All of the works invite us to look at our surroundings anew.

About G20 Artist Collective

The G20 Artist Collective was established in January 2022 following two years of lockdowns, online shows, and solo studio working. Excited by the rich seam of practicing creatives in the G20 location of Glasgow, Connie Liebschner set about making a way to meet more frequently, share ideas, and to bring the artists’ work back to the local community. The Collective comprises 12 selected artists and includes painters, photographers, fine artists, and jewellery makers. The collective opens new conversations between frequently divided artistic disciplines whilst creating opportunities for each artist to discuss, collate and share their creative output for the enjoyment of the community in which they live and work.

Artists exhibiting will be Kirsty Anderson, Hugh Gillan, Ratnadevi Holtberndt, Connie Liebschner, Maria McCavana, Laura Murray, Daisy Richardson, Helen Robinson, Colin Thomson, Emma Thomson, Jessica Wolfson and Annabel Wright.

You can follow the Collective on Instagram.
