We are delighted to announce that the Big Lottery Fund have awarded a grant of £193,938 to Maryhill Burgh Halls Trust. This will support the Trust's work over the period of the next four years, and in particular allow us to employ a fixed term, part-time volunteer coordinator to increase and support the volunteering opportunities available with the Trust.
It also allows our existing Halls Manager - the Trust's only permanent employee - to become full time to better enable a wider range of events using the Hall facilities.
Over 100 consultation surveys made clear the strength of opinion and the need for further development of the Burgh Halls services and support, and there is much we still want to achieve, which this support from Big Lottery should help to allow.
Welcoming the funding Irene Scott, Maryhill Burgh Halls Trust Chair said, “We are truly delighted to have been awarded a generous grant from the Big Lottery Fund. This valuable grant will allow us to build on the work we have done over the past two years since the buildings were restored and re-opened.
“Over 500 events have already taken place in the buildings, including weddings, children’s parties, music, arts, dance and community consultation events. This funding will greatly benefit the people and local organisations in Maryhill by allowing the Trust to continue to provide facilities for the local community and further develop community projects by enlisting the help of more volunteers to become involved in a wider range of our activities.”

The Primrose Nursery based at the Halls is having a Christmas Fair on Sunday 1st December to raise money for nearby East Park! Come along and hear our Songs of the Trades choir in action and loads of other fun events!

This month we are delighted to welcome experienced teachers and performers, Alenka from Slovenia and Ariel from Argentina, who have recently arrived in Scotland and are based in Stirling see http://www.yirajetango.co.uk/
Alenka and Ariel's teaching methodology, which has been carefully designed throughout 14 years of experience, is focussed on body language and communicative aspects of tango. They will hold a free introductory class for all levels at 7pm, the theme of which is "Improvisation in Tango: Structures and Elements (Embellishments) within Musicality".
They will also perform at the milonga. Entrance to the milonga is £7 for dancers and £5 for non dancers. Students are asked to contribute what they can afford. No bar - BYOB. Soak up the atmosphere of captivating Argentine Tango music whatever your level of dance ability and please encourage friends to come along and enjoy the evening and see the performance. The proceeds of this exciting evening will be used to support arts and cultural activities in the local area of Maryhill. A large-scale McFall’s tango band will take to the stage with music straight from the South American bordellos, adding a spicy warmth to the chilly nights of a Scottish winter. Expect a big night out, combining music and song, dancing and wine, as special guest artists from the tango world visit Scotland to perform with Mr McFall’s Chamber.
Sit back, relax and enjoy the music or, if you’re feeling more daring, bring your dancing shoes and be transported to a sultry Milonga in South America. Tango experts from The Latin Dance Connection will be on hand to help beginners along.
A post-concert DJ tango dancing Milonga is also free to all ticket holders.

Maryhill Burgh Halls is delighted to be taking part in Glasgow's Doors Open Days again this year!
On Saturday 21st September the Main Hall and foyer areas will be open all day from 10-6.
Additionally, we will be running guided tours of the entire building for free at 11am,1pm and 3pm. No booking required - just turn up!
On the Saturday at Midday, we also have a performance by our Songs of the Trades Children's Choir, with pupils from St Charles and Caldercuilt Primary coming together to perform songs relating to the historic stained glass windows in both English and Gaelic, led by local artist Maeve Mackinnon.
Also on the Saturday, at 4pm there is a guided walk of Historic Maryhill, lasting around 2 hours (or rather shorter if the weather is bad!). Places for this can be booked online for free here:

On Sunday 22nd September, the Main Hall and foyer area will be open from10-5, with free guided tours at 11am, 1pm and 3pm. No booking required - just turn up!
We're delighted that visitors will also be able to enjoy and experience the delight and passion of Argentine Tango. Experienced teachers and performers Facundo Menendez from Buenos Aires, currently teaching in Glasgow and Edinburgh, and Milly Wang, currently based in Stockholm, will perform in the Hall at 2pm and 4pm - you can even have some elementary tuition after the class if you are up for it and also find out about where to learn and dance tango in Glasgow!

We're delighted to announce that our very own Hunter Reid, Project Coordinator for the Maryhill Burgh Halls project for the last 10 years, and without whom the whole thing would not have happened, has been awarded an OBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours list.
The citation says that the award is 'For services to architecture and community engagement in Glasgow' - a great summary of many years of work.

A lot of Argentinean Tango will be danced at Maryhill Burgh Halls during the next month. The Glasgow International Tango Festival will be held over the weekend of Fri 12, Sat 13, Sun 14 April see http://www.gitf.net/index.html or email glasgowtangofestival@gmail.com for further details.
There will be 6 International teachers leading workshops and performing events at the Halls. If you have never danced tango before, why not sign up for the beginners class led by 2 Glasgow based teachers (held at Wellington Church in the West End) and then come to the Halls to experience an evening of Argentine Tango (a Milonga).
Apart from the festival, regular Argentine Tango dance evenings (Milongas) are held on the 4th weekend of each month to raise money for
arts and cultural activities in the local area of Maryhill. The next event is on Sunday 24 March from 7pm till 11pm and there will be a
free Introduction to Tango Class for Complete Beginners.

A twenty-minute selection of Christmas carols in English and Gaelic by Primary 5 pupils led by Gaelic and Scots song specialist Maeve Mackinnon. Please come and join us - the event is free of charge. If weather permits the event will take place in the newly formed public space at the corner of Maryhill Road and Gairbraid Avenue and if the weather is bad it will be held in the Hall.

Hopefully you've noticed that the front cover of this year's Glasgow Doors Open Days brochure prominently features some of our fantastic old and new stained glass windows. There have even been adverts on the subway, banners on Buchanan Street and posters in the centre of town, all featuring the stained glass!

The band perform for some competition-winning fans at an exclusive private concert at Maryhill Burgh Halls

The project has brought three derelict, “at risk”, listed buildings in the heart of one of the most deprived areas in Scotland back to life - giving a new focus for the local community. It mixed traditional building methods with high-quality new build, to create vibrant, in-demand facilities for the area, including a public hall/events space, meeting rooms, a cafe, a nursery, community and commercial recording studios, heritage displays, plus over 10,000 sq ft of high spec office space.
Complementing the buildings are a series of historically and socially unique stained glass windows from 1878, depicting the trades and working people of the local area, now restored and back on display for the first time in nearly half a century, alongside new artworks inspired by local people.
