In this session we will look at some original artefacts from the golden age of cinema and you can see some photos of cinemas in their heyday. Remembering Glasgow’s Forgotten Women

Wednesday 12 December, 2018 – 6.30 p.m. – 8.00 p.m.

Maryhill Burgh Halls, 24 Gairbraid Ave, Glasgow G20 8YE

Hosted by Women’s Support Project

You are invited to an informal evening looking at the history behind the “Glasgow System” – a time in our city’s history which saw the collusion of the church, local authorities, police and medical profession to enforce the social repression of women.
The “Glasgow System” was set up in response to the city’s growing concern about prostitution, sexually transmitted disease and the moral health of society. The system resulted in thousands of women being incarcerated in the Glasgow Magdalene Asylum, Lochburn House, the Lock Hospital and Duke Street prison. Those imprisoned came were generally termed “prostitutes”, an umbrella term at the time which encompassed single mothers, socialists, mill girls, actresses as well as those who sold sex for money. Lochburn House only closed its doors in 1958.

Thousands of women were placed in these institutions, many never being released.

These women were not afforded the luxury of a fair and just society. They committed no crime. They were never convicted of any wrongdoing, so in essence they had no right to appeal.

‘We would like a Commemorative space with a plaque to remember the women who were incarcerated in institutions as part of the Glasgow system, especially those women who were said to be involved in prostitution.’

‘We would love you to join us to hear your thoughts on how these women and their mistreatment can be acknowledged.’

Exhibtion: Fred's War

Fred's War Photograph

Fred's War tells the extraordinary story of the 1st Cameronians, who achieved notoriety for selling The Great War's earliest front line photographs. Follow Fred Davidson and his band of brothers from the parade ground at the Wyndford Barracks to the trenches of the Western Front.

Maryhill Barracks were built in 1872, but were decommissioned in the 1960s when the site was given over to social housing. The site is now owned by Cube Housing Association, part of Wheatley Group. The exhibition is presented in conjunction with them, as part of the Wyndford People's History Project.

The exhibition will be on public display in the Halls from 21st October until 22nd February 2019.

What About the Women Exhibition Talk

What About The Women?

A local women's history talk by Anabel Marsh

Maryhill Burgh Halls Trust are delighted to host the “Lost Glasgow – More Than Just Memories” exhibition from 27th November 2017 until 27th February 2018, on loan from Glasgow City Heritage Trust.

To celebrate our local heritage and illuminate the exhibition’s themes, we are presenting a series of talks delving into Glasgow’s dynamic history. The famous Victorian stained glass windows on display at Maryhill Burgh Halls depict Maryhill workers and trades in the busy Victorian era, and tell the story of one of Glasgow’s historic burghs. However, only two of the original 20 panels portray women. This conspicuous lack of representation sparked the interest of local Glasgow Women’s Library and Maryhill Burgh Halls Trust volunteer, Anabel Marsh. She did a lot more digging, and her talk entitled “What About the Women?” highlights the forgotten histories of women in Maryhill and Glasgow, dating back to the 18th century. Join us on to hear Anabel share the stories of Glasgow women in industry, the arts and politics throughout the ages.

Date: Wednesday 7th February 2018 (SOLD OUT) & Wednesday 21st February
Time: 6.30pm - 8pm
Ticket price: £5.00

Tickets for 7th February have sold out but a new date has been added on the 21st February.

For tickets please visit the Eventbrite page clicking the link here

Tea and coffee refreshments will be available.

Limited off street parking and disabled parking is available outside the Burgh Halls.

Please wear clothing suitable for mixed terrain and weather.
